Foundational elements needed to thrive in a hybrid workplace

As the trend towards hybrid workplaces increases across industries, businesses must ensure they laydown a strong foundation to successfully navigate this new normal. Working in an environment where employees rotate between virtual and on-site settings requires leaders to develop strategies rooted in flexibility, technology and trust.

Let’s look at three key foundational elements for companies to embrace in a modern hybrid workspace.

  • Communication
Communicating is key in any workplace and with the rise of remote work, it's even more important to be able to connect with your colleagues in meaningful ways. However, with so many communication tools available, it can be difficult to keep track of everything.

  • Community
Building community and inspiring people back to the office is the second. Back-to-work mandates have not gone over well. In general, people don’t like to be forced to change or told what to do.

In a Slack survey published in the Fall of 2022,
“94% of workers said they want flexibility in when they work — compared to 80% of respondents who said they want flexibility in where they work.”

With that in mind, countless companies have shifted to a hybrid model. This means that some employees work in the office while others work remotely or come in for part of the week or on occasion.

Data from our latest Microsoft Work Trend Index research showed, 74% of employees would go to the office more frequently if they knew their “work friends” were there and 73% of employees would go to the office more frequently if they knew their direct team members would be there.

Knowing when people are going into the office and where they will be can help drive more in-person collaboration and office usage with nudging relevant information inter-departmentally, by project team or inter-personally.

  • Engagement.
Finally, it's important to note that it’s not just about technology it's about culture and mindset. Employees want more than a paycheck today. They want to feel like they belong and that starts with engagement.

Companies with a highly engaged workforce are 21% more profitable and 17% more productive than those with disengaged staff according to a Gallup poll from December, 2022.

Engaged employees outperform their peers because they tend to be more connected, efficient, and motivated with higher customer retention rates. Strong employee engagement is an undeniable advantage to employers who are more likely to achieve a successful and profitable business and in a hybrid environment that can be isolating and challenging.

With these foundational elements secured, businesses can utilize the capabilities of a hybrid workplace

and make headway on their path towards long-term success that supports growth into the future.
